Tragedy

Throughout the services history tragedy has struck both pilots and the cutters, whether it be from the hazards of transfer to vessels, in severe weather, enemy action or equipment failure.

Only a few years ago the Pilot launch Shearwater was lost to fire fortunately without loss of life, largely thanks to the training and determination of the launch crew.

The most recent tragedy major tragedy was in 1939 when the Charles livingston stranded on Ainsdale beach with considerable loss of life.

Fortunately mishaps are rare and safety is a major consideration though never taken for granted
